Our nation's food system is extremely unsustainable in terms of energy use, water use, land use, ecological systems, community, and economics. Shifting food production to a more localized system in that is in close proximity to the population it sustains (in urban areas or immediately adjacent to them) has numerous benefits including job creation, better defining urban boundaries, reduced energy use, reduced environmental impacts, urban livability, education and awareness of food production, and more accountability, which leads to a more humane, sustainable, and healthy food system overall.

Food security is going to be a big issue in the near future. Food security will deteriorate due to fuel costs, climate change, and economic volatility. The US no longer stores food: national stockpiles were abolished by Clinton. Most communities would run out of food in three days, if no external supply is available.

Promoting urban farming is essential for the following reasons:
(1) to reduce our reliance on energy to produce our food (approximately 19% of the total fossil fuel used in the US is consumed by our "industrial" food system)
(2) To help slow down global warming
(3) To produce healthier, tastier and sustainable food.
