It is essential that the revenue from such essential taxation be prohibited, by “lock box” law, from being used for road widening. Indeed, much of it should be used to restore the livability and compatibility of oversized roads by funding travel lane removal (“road diets”).

The biggest subsidy, by far, is free parking. Other subsidies: (1) Roads & road-widening that is not funded by user (congestion) fees. (2) The artificially (and under-taxed) cost of gasoline. (3) Sprawl development that is not charged impact fees to compensate for the higher cost of sprawl development.

Strongly promote traditional, timeless, walkable design. All forms of lifestyles should be promoted. Make all forms legal, rather than only suburban. Land Value Taxation is a must. By contrast, system used by nearly all cities, discourages infill, improvement & redevelopment of property in the city core area, thereby promotes sprawl & the speculative holding of property as surface parking lots.

The US passenger rail system is a national disgrace. The lack of such a system is enormously costly to households and governments, is significantly fueling sprawl, is destroying communities, and is maintaining an unsustainable transportation system.

Toll as many roads as possible. Unpriced roads violate market principles, which creates over-use of roads, & quickly results in congestion. Pricing efficiently allocates road space & ensures higher-value car trips are not slowed by lower-value trips. Toll rds promote non-car travel, discourage sprawl, & create needed government revenue. As a user fee, it reduces the subsidy of roads by non-users.
